was waiting for my boyfriend to knock off and spent the time in times bookshop yesterday.
scan through the rules of life by richard templar.
here are what i like:
rule 5
know what counts and what doesn’t.
there are some things in this life that are important and a whole lot of things that aren’t.
rule 16
change what you can change, let go of the rest.
dedicate yourself personally to things you can change, areas where you can make a difference.
rule 17
aim to be the very best at everything you do- not the second best.
failing is fine. aiming for second best isn’t.
rule 22
dress like today is important.
people will react differently to you if you dress as if it matters.
rule 36
know when to let go- when to walk away.
if it’s dead, don’t go digging it up every five minutes to check if there’s a pulse. it’s dead. walk away.
rule 50
if you can’t say anything nice at all, don’t say anything at all.
this, my dear, is what they call an adventure.
rule 55
be the first to say sorry.
we can say sorry and retain our dignity and respect.
rule 64
treat your partner better than your best friend.
rule 72
never lend money unless you are prepared to write it off.
every man is limited in life by three things :
- the knowledge of his own mind
- the worth of his own character
- the principles upon which he builds his own life
these things shape a man within, for better or worse. they define the quality of his life. quality is always internal, not external.
- abstract from real man, by dr. edwin cole
i found this book while browsing my brother’s bookshelf, and this particular paragraph which was underlined, caught my attention.
if you are struggling with point 1, you can read “the creative mind by ulf ekman”.
if you are struggling with point 2, you can listen to “your mind & self-image by kong hee”.
if you are struggling with point 3, you need to come to God and do some soul searching.
some things to ponder:
- how would people define your quality as a person?
- would people define you as one with good reputation, or one with a lousy reputation?
the five people you meet in heaven- mitch albom
the first book i’ve completed this year!
what i’ve learnt/ what i like:
- no life is a waste. the only time life is wasted is when we spend time thinking we are alone.
- when you sacrificed something precious, you are not losing it but actually passing it to someone else.
- anger is poisonous. it’s like a curved blade. when you are angry towards someone, you think you are attacking the other party, but we are doing harm to ourselves.
- love does not die. memory is our partner. we nurture, hold and dance with it.
- we live to impact people around us.
